There is also one more aspect of Knights of Columbus worth mentioning, that is the insurance products offered to members and their families. Members have no obligation to participate, however consistent superior financial strength rating (A+), and the exceptional customer service makes it worth considering.  It is a large insurer, with about 2 million members and $109 billion of life insurance in force.  Products offered cover every aspect of the financial protection: permanent and term life, retirement annuities, long term care, and disability insurance. There was a time in our country when families, coping with the loss of their sole provider, were facing extreme poverty and hardship. There was no social network or safety net that would provide help. It was very difficult for the Catholic men to find a job; they were not welcomed in the place of work.

In response to this seemingly impossible situation, the catholic priest Father Michael McGeveny with the small band of man founded in 1882 the Knights of Columbus. Named in honor of Christopher Columbus it was dedicated to provide support and financial resources to struggling Catholic men and their families. Under the initial insurance scheme devised by founder McGivney, a deceased Knight's widow was granted a $1,000 death benefit, funded by a pro-rata contribution from the membership. In addition, there was also a sick benefit for members who fell ill and could not work. In time, with millions of members around the world it has become the largest Catholic fraternal service organization.
